At Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Benjamin L. Simpson led the freshman squad to a surprise victory over the seniors. After that victory over the seniors, Simpson was invited to play for the seniors and remained with them through 1903.

Simpson was a star halfback and kicker with the Hamilton Tigers for several years while he completed his education, then held a teaching position in Hamilton. Simpson was the Tigers captain in 1910 and played in the second ever Grey Cup versus the University of Toronto.

Benjamin L. Simpson is also a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum in 1963 as a player.
