Dave (Tuffy) Knight's Canadian university football career began in 1966, when he was named the Head Coach at Wilfrid Laurier (formerly known as Waterloo Lutheran) University after serving as an assistant coach for the 1965 season.

Knight spent 18 seasons at Wilfrid Laurier leading the Golden Hawks to Yates Cup (the Ontario Collegiate football championship) victories in 1966, 1968, 1972, 1973, and 1978 and advanced to the Vanier Cup (Canadian Collegiate football championship) in 1966, 1972, and 1973. He won the Frank Tindall trophy award (Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU) Coach of the Year) in 1972 and 1979. After the 1983 season, Knight became the player personnel director for the Canadian Football League (CFL) Toronto Argonauts, a position he held from 1984 until 1988.

Prior to the 1989 collegiate football season, Knight returned to the coaching ranks when he became the Head Coach for the University of Waterloo. In his first season with the Warriors, Knight turned a struggling program into a contender that posted a winning record for the first time in many seasons. For his efforts, Knight was the Coach of the Year in 1989. In 1997, Knight led the Warriors to their first ever Yates Cup. Knight once again retired from the CIAU following the 1997 season as the winning coach in CIAU history.

At the time of his retirement, Knight amassed an all-time coaching record of 163-79-4 and developed dozens of players and coaches who progressed to the CFL.

Dave (Tuffy) Knight is also a member of the Laurier's Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1986.

Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum in 2007 as a builder.
