Coaching Career

John P. Metras was an Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) all-star Centre at St. Michael's College before beginning an illustrious coaching career in 1935.

Over a 30 year period, Metras, nicknamed "Bull", coached the Western Mustangs squads to 106 wins, 76 losses and 11 ties. Metras teams won nine Yates Cup championships (Ontario university football), and once went undefeated for 29 games. Metras was the athletic director at western from 1945-1972 and also coached many successful basketball teams.

The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) annually presents the John P. Metras trophy to the lineman of the year.

John P. Metras is also a member of the University of Western Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum in 1980 as a builder.
