Gillis Purcell

Born in Brandon, Gillis Purcell graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1924. Purcell joined the Canadian Press (CP) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and later transferred to Toronto and originated the selection of Canadian Football League All-Star teams by Canada's sportswriters.

As a CP war correspondent, he arrived overseas with Canada's first contingent in 1939, and served in the Canadian Army until 1942. He was General Manager of CP from 1945 to 1969.

Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame-Media Wing in 1987
