John Helton played 219 games over his 14-year career, and was an all-star almost every season.

Helton was his team's nominee for the outstanding lineman award twice, the outstanding defensive player award six times, and the most outstanding player award twice.

John Helton was the first recipient of the Norm Fieldgate trophy, awarded to the Outstanding Defensive Player in the West.

Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum in 1986 as a player.
